Fabien savours the Bourg challenge

Author: Bourg Saint-Maurice, host to the French national championships, is an unforgiving natural course full of surprises. Fabien, who won a world K1 title there in 2002, has been training hard for this weekend’s competition despite a bad head cold – and, whatever the result, he’s already thinking about coming back in 2011.

Denis rides the Bourg roller-coaster
In the run-up to the French national championships at Bourg Saint-Maurice in the mountains of Savoie, everyone, it seems, is ill. Denis and Fabien both have sore throats and blocked noses. Fortunately for Denis, he never tires of sailing at Bourg, which reacts very differently to the man-made pools he and Fabien usually sail on.
Fabien works to recapture K1 form
Fabien, looking ahead to the French championships at the end of July, hopes to recapture the K1 form that has been lacking since he won a silver medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He knows and likes the Bourg Saint-Maurice course in the mountains of Savoie. He became world champion there in 2002.
Cancelled Europeans rescheduled
The 2010 European championships, cut short in June by flooding on the Danube and initially cancelled, have been rescheduled. They will now take place in Bratislava, Slovakia, from August 13-15. In the meantime, Denis is hoping to win the French national C1 title in Bourg Saint-Maurice.
Final World Cup: 2nd in C2, Selection x3
Fabien and Denis finish a heartbeat away from victory in the double canoe (C2) in the final World Cup of the season in Germany. As well as 2nd place in C2, they secure selection for all three boats (C2 C1 K1) in the French team for the world championships in September, but the competition in Augsburg is far from easy.
