Samedi, journée “off”.

Kayakists Benjamin Renia and Etienne Daille join Fabien and Denis Down Under in a winter-training working group ahead of this summer’s Olympics. Fabien picks up the story…

« We’re not together for every training session but we are virtually once a day.

« It’s a good opportunity to pit yourself against others and raise your game. It’s something specific to our sport which, when all’s said and done, remains an individual sport. It’s quite possible to train with your rivals on a daily basis… Interestingly enough, it remains nothing but healthy rivalry. For example, this afternoon, Peter Kauzer (world champion in 2009 and 2011) is coming to do some timed runs with us!

« Today, we had our first joint video viewing session… I don’t think we’ve seen that since 2003 when Sylvain Curinier was training the French K1 group!

« Canoe-kayak slalom is, above all, a sport in which the real competition is the water, the course and you yourself… It’s a very good school! »

Fabien and Denis begin their Olympic year in Australia at their annual training camp on the Sydney pool that attracts the cream of the slalom paddlers each winter. This year, Fabien has reservations about the pool’s configuration.

The team that will work together over the next two months is now complete with the arrival in Sydney today of the Duo’s coach Jean-Yves Cheutin and their fitness trainer Paul Boussemart.

Fabien himself arrived two weeks ago and has been training twice-a-day on the pool that hosted the canoe and kayak slalom competitions at the 2000 Olympics. Here are his thoughts:

«The configuration of the pool is not the best this year. I think they’ll have to change it between between now and the Australian Open (February 10-12) and the Oceania Championship (February 24-6). Initally, however, it’s adequate for acclimatising and getting used to the time difference.

«Australia is reputed to be THE place for winter training attracting the best international athletes. Each day, people are arriving. The training slots are filling up. Since I’ve been here, I’ve sailed with several Australians and German Fabian Doerfler (2005 World K1 champion).

« The next step (for the team) is a big meeting to finalise just how we will work together on the huge training programme which awaits us! »

The training programme…

For the first time, their fitness trainer Paul Boussemart will also be working with them Down Under. Here are Fabien’s thoughts ahead of what promises to be a roller-coaster year.

« The journey was quite quick despite 20 hours in the air! Logistically, everything worked okay. My boat was in perfect condition when I retrieved it from freight. I found a flat to rent the day of my arrival. Training began gently with a few flat-water sessions.

« The weather was on the cool side… 20° (!) and cloudy for the season but all the better for that while I acclimatise and recover from the time difference.

« Let me use this little message to, once again, thank all those who have accompanied me this season, particularly my sponsors who enable me to prepare for each season in the best possible conditions. Happy Chjristmas and a Happy New Year to everyone. See you in 2012!»

« (Whitewater) slalom is a sport that’s not yet that well-known and the rules are sometimes difficult to grasp… particularly when you’re only 11 years old! So I visited this class to talk about the sport and to answer their questions, which focused on the day-to-day life of a champion and the Olympics.

« It’s interesting and sometimes more complicated answering questions from these apprentice journalists than from the media itself! There’s always a warm welcome and I hope that this presentation will encourage some of them to come to the club and try their hand at the sport… »

« Even if I couldn’t do a timed run today, I took advantage of this weekend to test my new boat on a natural run that I’ve got to know well since the advent of short boats (the mimum length passed from 4m to 3.5m in 2005)…

« I’m not sure if I’ll compete in any other races in France between now and the Olympic trials at the start of April. There’ll be several competitions in the southern hemisphere, from January, to help me prepare well. »

Fabien resumes training, chills out with fellow Team Adidas members in Corsica, tests his new K1 in a race in Pau and competes for fun in C1, an event he might take more seriously after the London Olympics!

Time Out with Adidas

« Conviviality was the name of the game at this get-together. It’s always excellent to meet up with the other champions and spend time with them… particularly when the host is Adidas!

« We did work a bit. The marketing group briefed us on how they expected us to help promote the brand but they also presented their objectives and strategy. We were briefed on the technical qualities of the different ‘Adidas Performance’ products.

« The CNOSF (French National Olympic Committee) outlined the rules concerning the participation of an athlete at the Olympics and how the future ‘Club France’ will work in London.

« Christophe Paco (French network RTL) offered a few media relations tips for sportsmen and sportswomen. »

Grand Prix de Pau

Despite a lack of training and returning to Pau late the night before, Fabien finishes 6th in both the K1 and the C1 against stiff competition at the Grand Prix de Pau.

« It was a pretty good start to the new season. The reflexes weren’t too sharp given the lack of training since my return from holiday but I put in a good second run with the final version of my new boat (the Paddler Equipment I-Boat). I hadn’t had the opportunity to try it out (in competition) before.

« The K1 race was very close. We’re still 7 or 8 competitors within 1.2 seconds of one another! The race for Olympic selection seems to have begun even if the start of April (and the national trials) are still a way away.

« In C1, I had great fun on the second run and finished among the best in National 1. I train in C1 from time to time when the schedule doesn’t enable me to train in the C2 with Denis. As a result, I’m starting to develop some good reflexes! The experience that I gain will also stand me in good stead if my plan to race in C1 takes shape after 2012… »
